Please Read This...and Act.
I posted about this last summer when I first heard about it. For more info go to the links in the story, or click the UN Foundation link on the right. It's only $10, which is actually $20, so you are saving 8 lives....for the cost of a case of beer.
"Dear Friend,
Thanks to your support, the Nothing But Nets campaign is gaining incredible momentum moving into 2007. Together, we raised over $2.2 million in 2006 that means more than 220,000 children in Africa will be safe each night because of you! But we have a lot more to do in 2007.
Today we wanted to let you know that we've received our first-ever challenge grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Gates Foundation grant will match your donations dollar for dollar, net for net! For every bed net you send to a child in Africa, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will send one, too. That is twice the number of bed nets, twice the impact, all from your donation!
Double your donation of nets today!
The announcement of the challenge grant was featured today at a Nothing But Nets event hosted by the National Basketball Association. Many of the partners of the campaign, including the People of the United Methodist Church, Sports Illustrated, VH1, United Nations Foundation, UNICEF, Mark J. Gordon Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation joined the NBA in New York City to share their commitments to the campaign and raise awareness about malaria. Check out www.NothingButNets.net for stories about the event from supporters like Rick Reilly, Katherine Commale and Sam Perkins!
You can show your commitment to combating malaria as well join us by buying at least one bed net today. Your $10 donation will now go twice as far, providing two bed nets thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Send a Net. Save a Life.
Wishing you the best in the New Year,
The Nothing But Nets Teamwww.nothingbutnets.net"

Great way to roll in the new year-you've got to hand it to Bill: he doesn't have to do this. He could just go about his daily business and forget the rest of the world. But to have the means, and do something positive with it is heartening.
Got the card from Guernsey today. Thanks - it's a real treasure.

Many good things we can contribute too...this may be one of them but sorry to say I can't see myself doing anything that "Big Billy" has his finger in. Guess I'm just too much of a cynical old cogger to trust his motives. However, directly helping the Stephen Lewis Foundation is another matter. Him I trust..we know which pack he has been running with all these years....... The Peoples.
Feel down right guilty... plus 12c here today..more like March than Jan.
See you later...maybe in May!

You don't send a cheque to Bill Gates' house, it's to the United Nations. The Gates Foundation matches your contribution. I can see your point, it is pretty untrustworthy for a guy to donate Billions of dollars of his own money to philanthropy. If he had donated Trillions, and actually gone to Africa and deliberately contracted malaria, I guess he could earn "The People's" trust and respect. Of course in the ten minutes it took for me to read the response, and type a comment, 20 odd people just died of malaria.

Right you are Chappy..your facts are right..'Big Billy' did give tons of cash..(and really made our PM look bad which pleases me to no end) but Mr Bill arrived at the 'Help Humanity Party' a tad late. I still prefer to give what little I can to Stephen Lewis and his gang...as a matter of fact..his contributions also go via the UN route (bug-net being one aspect as well)and after hearing him speak , 'my prejudices' changed to 'my preferences'. I 'prefer' to support via
Steve rather than Billy. The real point is...support where one can!
However all we Old Gits are a little slow off the mark.
Am still feeling guilty..'cause we
are still Snowless!!! Ugh!
Hang in there!
